During renovations on a home in Dendermonde, Belgium, construction workers stumbled upon a surprising find while drilling into the cellar walls. Inside, they uncovered a hidden collection of gold bars and coins estimated to be worth around €9 million (£7.6 million). Authorities are now investigating the ownership of this immense treasure.
The discovery was made earlier this week as the team installed new sewage pipes at the property located in East Flanders. What began as a routine foundation upgrade quickly turned into a gripping mystery with potentially long-lasting legal implications.
The building is owned by CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, a social welfare group based in Dendermonde — a town of approximately 47,000 inhabitants. However, possession of property does not automatically resolve who holds rights to such a significant hidden fortune.
Initial Mistake: Mistaking Valuable Gold for Simple Coins
Among the crew was Kobe, an 18-year-old student employed for the summer, whose first impression vastly underestimated the value of their find.
“Our first reaction was actually disbelief, amazement,” Kobe told Belgian public broadcaster VRT, according to the report. At first, he thought the objects were simply €1 coins. Then something else caught the workers’ attention. “We also saw a gold nugget lying there. That’s when we realized it was something bigger.”

The site crew uncovered vast amounts of gold coins along with gold bars, prompting them to alert the authorities without hesitation. The project leader, Mario, emphasized that keeping such a substantial haul personally was never a consideration.
“There are so many coins and bars — it would be almost impossible,” he said. “Besides, that would be theft.”
Police Warn Against Unauthorized Treasure Hunting
Following notification, the authorities transferred the gold treasure to a safeguarded location. The unusual find attracted attention, prompting law enforcement to caution people against trespassing the active construction zone in hopes of locating more valuables.
According to the BBC, the residence was thoroughly searched, with all discovered gold secured. In acknowledgment of the exceptional discovery, local police updated their Facebook profile image to feature a gold coin. Their Facebook announcement expressed hope the treasure will “eventually end up in the right place” and positively impact lives.

This discovery holds particular relevance for CAW Oost-Vlaanderen. The organization’s director, Geert Hillaert, shared his feelings of “surprise and amazement.” He voiced hope that if the entity eventually benefits, the funds could support essential welfare initiatives addressing the “enormous need we experience daily.” However, authorities are still determining rightful ownership.
Ownership of the Gold Remains Unclear
The biggest hurdle remains identifying who truly owns the gold. A local prosecutor has launched an inquiry, but no confirmed claimant has come forward. Per Belgian law, the owner has up to five years to stake a legal claim. This implies that both the construction team and CAW Oost-Vlaanderen could face a wait extending over 1,800 days before resolution.
If unclaimed after this period, Belgian civil law states that hidden valuables found on private land may be divided between the finder and the property owner. Accordingly, both the builders and the welfare group might be entitled to portions of the €9 million treasure.

One critical caveat is the requirement for officials to verify that the gold is not linked to criminal acts. Until the investigation concludes and the claim window expires, neither group can confirm whether they will benefit. Presently, the fundamental question remains: who will ultimately lay claim to this extraordinary treasure?
