A Scientist’s 100-Day Submerged Experiment Reveals Surprising Body Transformations

Biomedical engineer Joseph Dituri spent 100 consecutive days living in a compact habitat positioned 22 feet below the surface near Key Largo, Florida. During this extraordinary stay, he set a new record and observed significant bodily changes, which he now aims to investigate through scientific research, although some experts remain skeptical.

The 60-year-old’s mission wasn’t about breaking records but rather exploring how prolonged exposure—lasting months rather than minutes—to high-pressure underwater environments affects human physiology. These conditions mirror those utilized in hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), a medical treatment traditionally used to address issues like decompression sickness or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Understanding these effects carries importance because HBOT is gaining attention for potential broader applications. Some scientists suggest it could influence aging processes by affecting stem cell activity and protecting chromosome telomeres. Dituri’s 2023 experiment effectively served as a unique, long-term human trial.

Physiological Effects After Spending 100 Days Underwater

While subject to pressures of 1.6 atmospheres (approximately 25 psi), Dituri noted several notable changes in his health. These included a reduction of cholesterol by 72 points, an eight-pound weight loss despite maintaining the same diet, decreased inflammatory indicators such as cortisol, and a substantial increase in testosterone levels.

Popular Mechanics described the hormonal change as “sevenfold testosterone enhancement.” However, not all outcomes were beneficial; the high pressure compressed his spine, causing a height reduction of about three-quarters of an inch, which he considered an unexpected yet intriguing effect.

Improved Sleep and Enhanced Brain Function

Prior to his descent, Dituri modified conditions at his Tampa home by darkening his windows and lowering temperatures to replicate those inside the underwater chamber, establishing a baseline for comparison. During the immersion, he experienced double the amount of REM sleep compared to his land-based sleep.

An electroencephalogram conducted afterward revealed increased brain coherence, indicating that neural networks were communicating more effectively than before. Dituri describes these combined effects as remarkable, suggesting that hyperbaric environments might positively impact long-term health beyond their current therapeutic uses.

Ongoing Debate Among Experts

Despite hopeful findings, some hyperbaric medicine specialists urge caution. Neal Pollock, a diving physiology expert at Laval University, notes that numerous patients undergo FDA-approved HBOT sessions lasting a month or more without evidence linking such therapies to increased lifespan, even under similar pressures to those experienced by Dituri.

Furthermore, researchers from Israel whose studies on telomeres are frequently cited in anti-aging discussions have clarified that their outcomes have been largely misunderstood and do not confirm longer lifespans. Kinjal Sethuraman, of the University of Maryland Medical Center’s Center for Hyperbaric and Dive Medicine, emphasizes:

“That money is better spent on healthier food, regular exercise, reducing stress, restorative sleep, and being part of a community. Those are the pillars of aging well.”

Acknowledging the limitations of his one-person study, Dituri refers to himself as an “n of one.” He has since collaborated with a larger project at Arizona State University in pursuit of the $101 million XPRIZE Healthspan, where 200 participants will undergo similar hyperbaric treatment protocols under controlled, rigorous research conditions far surpassing individual efforts.
